The Yanomami (pronounced yah-noh-mah-mee) are an indigenous ethnic group that resides in the Amazon rainforest of South America, primarily in Brazil and Venezuela. They are one of the largest isolated tribes in the region and have a unique and rich culture.
While living in Italy, I became aware of how well preserved the European cultural heritage is, and how much art has to do with it.
I'm concern about the loss of Cultural Heritage of our ethnic groups, and how our cultural practices, languages, or traditions can be lost over time.
By combining and interlacing icons from European painting with images of the Yanomami, I wanted to create an unexpected element. To present a subject out of its context, to challenge preconceived notions, and encourage the viewers to question the culture around them.
